+I’m new to BVARI and VA Research. Who can I contact?

Your first point of contact should be our Sponsored Programs team. Please email them at spa@bvari.org for any inquires regarding submitting a grant, the status of an awarded project, or any question regarding funding.

+My sponsor requires that I submit my proposal electronically. How do I do that?

Our Sponsored Programs team will help you submit the proposal. Please reach out to spa@bvari.org and provide a Proposal Planning Form at least 30 days in advance of the deadline.

+What if I submit a proposal without going through BVARI?

BVARI maintains the right to reject any award that is not submitted with our institutional approval, whether or not a sponsor requires it. Please always contact us in advance of proposal submission so that we may help you prepare, submit, and accept the best possible package.

+What kinds of proposals can I submit through BVARI?

BVARI can submit federal and private industry proposals. For proposals to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), please contact spa@bvari.org in advance for prior approval. We are currently not supporting proposals that require an indirect cost rate less than our federally negotiated rate (see here).

+Why should a sponsor pay facilities & administrative (F&A) costs on my award and what happens with that money?

BVARI is an independent nonprofit corporation that relies on our negotiated F&A rates to support our operations.

+A sponsor I would like to work with won’t pay BVARI's indirect or F&A costs. Can I still apply?

As an independent nonprofit corporation, BVARI relies solely on externally-funded F&A revenue to fund all of our operations. At this time, we are unable to accept awards at less than our negotiated rates.

+How do I request a no-cost extension (NCE)?

Please contact our Sponsored Programs team at spa@bvari.org at least 60 days prior to your award expiration so they may submit an official request to the sponsor.

+What can I do to start working on a new research project as soon as it's awarded?

In order to ensure project work and expenditures can begin, please make sure your award has all necessary VA R&D compliance committee/subcommittee approvals.

+My R&D/IRB/IACUC approval is pending. Can I begin my project work and expend funds?

BVARI can only administer VA-approved research and educational programs. VA committee approvals need to be in place prior to expending any funds or starting a project.

+I’m a VA PI and not a BVARI employee. How will my project salary be paid?

All awards must have PI and other project personnel effort and commensurate salary and fringe benefits. Our Sponsored Programs team will work with you to reimburse the VA for the commensurate salary and fringe benefits applied to an award.
